Part of the ongoing Ride Along series, Allen documents a structure she encounters in her Mississippi town, an old gas station transformed into a neon quick-loan storefront. The vivid colors of the station and sunset mesh into scenery that feels destined, but the desperation and boldness of the subject matter are almost comical. Allen heightens the physicality of the surface with dense impasto painting and mixed media, putting us in the passenger seat of her car and translating a fleeting photographic moment into a materially rich meditation on place, economic reality, and the evolving Southern landscape.
This piece was selected for the South Arts State Prize & Fellowship Traveling Exhibition. This work will travel for one year, beginning July 16th, and will be delivered to the collector upon return.
